Participants will learn appropriate skills to accurately facilitate the translation process.  This one day training will focus on translation of written material from English into a target language, and from target into source language.  It will provide an overview of how the translation industry is structured in the U.S.

  • Maintaining Neutrality in Difficult Situations

    Though technical terminology related to the Assessment, Review and Dismissal (ARD) process in Texas public schools will be covered, this 3-hour continuing education course will engage participants in an understanding of the broader scope of this interpreted setting. Beginning with an overview of its history and legal precedence for special education, as it relates to limited English proficiency, and continuing with the structure and timeline of ARDs, participants learn best practices (modes, roles and ethical considerations of the interpreter) and ARD-specific terminology that ultimately leads to a group demonstration and application of learned materials and skills through role play.

    Interpreting in mental health settings poses unique challenges for the professional interpreter. Therefore, it is critically important the interpreter be aware not only of the clinician and patient’s perceptions of mental health care and treatment, but also of his own attitudes and presumptions. Most specifically, the interpreter has to understand what therapy is and how it can be helpful to the client in order to best serve all parties in an interpreted session. This is a two day training interpreters will receive 16 hours CEUs. training will help working interpreters practice and develop simultaneous interpreting skills.  Interpreters will have the opportunity to record themselves and then evaluate their interpreting skills.

  • Legal Terminology for Interpreters and Translators

    Interpreting in legal settings can often be intimidating for novice interpreters, interpreters accustomed to school and healthcare environments or those who are unfamiliar with the Federal and Texas court systems. This 3-hour course provides a basic overview of the types of courts in which an interpreter works the structure of the court system, the expectations for court interpreters, legal terminology and hands-on practice of terms and skills through pair and group work or role play.

  • Ethics for Interpreters and Translators

    A refresher course for all active interpreters and translators. This 3-hour session will review the definition of ethics and the Interpreter’s Code of Ethics as outlined in the Introduction to Community Interpreting training. In addition, participants will be asked to use their personal experiences in the field and to judge real-life situations in relation to the Code of Ethics. Special topics in ethics will also be introduced.
